research Philosophy & Academics

As a game industry artist with nearly a decade of experience, my research investigates how 2D stylized visual design and UI/UX systems deepen player engagement. Through rigorous study of core mechanics and narrative themes, I design environment assets and character concepts that seamlessly integrate with gameplay systems—ensuring visual direction actively supports world-building, cognitive readability, and player retention.

As generative AI technologies rapidly enter production pipelines, practitioners face significant questions regarding artistic authorship and creative control. Rather than allowing automated tools to dictate visual direction or diminish human intentionality, my research advocates for an artist-led approach. My doctoral work seeks to examine how emerging technologies can be integrated into game pipelines to support labor-intensive tasks without compromising human creativity, stylistic integrity, or thematic depth.

Ultimately, I aim to develop practice-led theoretical frameworks that address how 2D stylized visual form interacts with evolving interactive technologies—establishing a bridge between commercial game production pipelines and academic ludology.
